The Hawk has spent the last 18 years securing his family's home, Inverfyre, from the MacLaren clan, but when he travels to Abernye and sees Lady Aileen, his goals are momentarily forgotten as he knows he must have her. Tall and plain, Aileen can hardly believe a man like the Hawk would even notice her. Aileen is also wary of his frightening reputation, and sure enough, he kidnaps her, marries her, and takes her to his home. But she is not what you would call unwilling. In an interesting and unusual plotline, Delacroix reveals that many generations ago, two people came together and vowed that they would never leave each other. Since then, their souls have been trying to find each other again, without success. Now both the Hawk and Aileen have visions of their previous incarnations, but while Aileen is determined to solve the riddle, the Hawk insists that no such mystery exists
