RSSOwl in Italy causing BM to crash

This past few weeks, BookMooch has crashed a few times, and I've been having a hard time figuring out why. I think I've found the problem.

There's a user in Italy using the program RSSOwl, and who, on average, requests 144,489 RSS pages every day from BookMooch. Yes, 144 thousand pages!

Now, it's very likely this user didn't realize what they were doing, when they perhaps checked an option to pound the heck out of the server. If you think it's you, can you drop support an email? and they'll help you configure your RSSOwl program to behave.

To guard against this problem, and similar problems in the future, I've limited all RSS users to 100 page requests per day. This seems fairly reasonable to me.

I might put some sort of "max pages you can request per day" limit in the future, say at a big number, such as 1000 per day, if I find other out-of-control programs causing heck.

Sorry for the long delay in figuring this out, but hopefully BookMooch will not crash now. The past two times it crashed (this morning and yesterday) this RSSOwl user was requesting 14 pages per second, so I'm pretty sure they're the cause of the problem.

Thank you for your investigative work! I guess, since I don't know what the RSSOwl program does, I'm not a user.

Thank you again for your diligence.

Sincerely,

I would like to see a more professional web site for bookmooch. I am also a member of Paperback Swap and there is no comparison between the sites. Paperback Swap also make many more options available to the user. As an example: you can print postage directly from the site to mail books. That is so convenient You can also keep track of the books you have read and the books to be read on your bookshelf.

PaperBackSwap also now charges many little finicking charges plus a membership fee, announced last February in a deceitful manner. That site has had more slowdowns and crashes since then than BookMooch ever has - so not very 'professional' at all. If BookMooch should choose that route, I'm outta here., as I'm happy with BM as it is.

I like BookMooch the way it is. If "professional" means a corporation taking profits wherever they can and disregarding the wants and needs of its users, then I hope BookMooch remains amateur. Just accept it... internet crap happens. Just ask Southwest this weekend about computer crap.

Thanks for figuring out the problem. I agree BM is just fine the way it is. Don't want to pay the extra fees Paperback Swap charges. I quit all together with Paperback Swap when they started charging fees. Don't want to have to do the same with BM. Again Thanks for fixing the problem!!

Thank you for letting us know what the problem was. I was really getting frustrated, but now I can sit back, mooch, read, and drink coffee. lol Those three things just seem to go together.

thank you for your information, not even sure I know what RSS is so I think i'm good... LOL I, like many, like BM just the way it is. I was a member of PaperBackSwap but have since left because of new fees, charges and such. I have always preferred BM and have recommended it to many of my friends and family. Thank you again

Just want to say that Jill and I have been happy moochers for many years. Thank you, John, for all the hard work you put into this website. BookMooch has been a real boon to book lovers like us.

Chalk me up as another moocher who used to use PBS sometimes, and quit when they announced the "now we're going to charge you money" changes. Their paid services have always reeked, anyway. And I've always preferred BookMooch.

I wanted to cry when SwapaDVD got slammed behind a similarly awful pay-to-request system, though (happened about six months before PBS) -- there's no BookMooch equivalent for CDs or DVDs!

John, thank you for your clever detective work and for leaving the site interface exactly how it is. It looks clean, comfortable, and easy to navigate; almost every time a website "revamps" to look more "professional," it becomes unwieldy and difficult to navigate. BookMooch's look is simple, intuitive, and everything it should be.

Every time I try to locate a book today, everything is turning into Italian and it keeps asking me to log in when I have already logged in. I am about to give up on Bookmooch.

No problems with Italian for me - I'm in France and was first on the site today about 5 hours ago. Did you click on a link that came from an Italian account? Try logging out and then logging in again.

Thanks so much for always being honest with us members about what happens. I know I enjoy it. Are you ever going to post an entry regaling us with your opinion/thoughts about PBS's change to a fee-based site?

Did Bookmooch close down. I cannot get into my account, even though it is for sure the correct username and password.

Well it looks like you haven't crashed in a while. And trust me everyone crashes every once in a while. As a tow truck driver I can say that honestly. (haha, get it?)

Carol,
If you are talking about the 2 spam comments before yours, they won't respond. You can report these accounts by going to their profile and hitting that "Report Abuse" button. I don't know how long it will take, but sometimes those accounts get removed.

If you're looking for companionship or entertainment the Call Girls in Ambassador Hotel Delhi, are available to accompany you. These individuals provide a service where they spend time with clients for a fee. It is important to remember that hiring call girls for any form of intimate activity is illegal in India.
